    Thursday's Results
In Huntingburg, Indiana, Thursday evening, the game between the Bombers and Danville Dans was suspended after the 4th inning due to a power outage that could not be expediently repaired. The score at the end of 4 innings is Dubois 2, Danville 1. If the game is ultimately important to determining the second half winner, it has been rescheduled for Sunday, if necessary. Statistics and the box score for this game will be posted Sunday if completed or as soon as the game is canceled, whichever comes first.

In Quincy, the Gems were able to scrape together a 4-1 win over the DuPage Dragons on Thursday night in the Gems final home game of the 2008 season. Quincy managed just three hits in the first six innings but benefited from four Dragon errors.

Thomas McCormick, who has recently found his stroke with six hits in the last two games, doubled to lead off the third inning. After back to back errors McCormick would score on a double play to put Quincy up 1-0. The Gems added another run in the fifth inning when Alex Acheson walked to start the fifth and would score two batters later on a RBI single by Kurtis Muller.

DuPage got on the board in the sixth on a solo home run by Matthew Brewer to make the score 2-1. The Gems got that run back in the bottom of the seventh when McCormick, who had singled, scored on a wild pitch. The runs continued in the seventh when Tyler Goodro doubled home Jon Myers and gave Quincy a 4-1 lead.

Springfield will host the opening game of the series on Tuesday night, August 12, as well as the "if necessary" game on Thursday night, August 14. The Sliders opponent in the series, which will be the winner of the second half, has yet to be determined.

    Gems Top Dragons 6-5
The Quincy Gems were able to overcome a late rally by the DuPage Dragons and pick up a 6-5 win at QU Stadium. The Gems blew a 5-2 lead in the eighth inning but scored in the bottom half and held on for the win.

After DuPage scored first with a run in the top of the first inning the Quincy Gems quickly answered three runs of their own in the bottom half of the frame. The Gems first four batters picked up hits with Kurtis Muller putting Quincy on top with a two run single. The Gems added a third run on a double play ground ball to hold a 3-1 lead after one inning.

DuPage chipped into the lead with a run in the fifth but Quincy opened their lead up to 5-2 with two runs in the seventh, coming on a two run home run by Thomas McCormick. The Dragons rallied for three runs in the eighth, as the Gems pitchers lost their control, walking three batters in the inning.

Quincy wasted little time in grabbing their lead back, plating one run in the bottom of the eighth. Tyler Goodro started the inning off with a single and was sacrificed to second base. After a single by Justin Dunning, the Dragon pitcher was called for a balk, allowing Goodro and Dunning to advance, giving Quincy a 6-5 lead.

The Dragons loaded the bases in the top of the ninth, with all three runners reaching base by way of walk. However the Gems were able to escape with the win, as the Dragons left the bases loaded, ending the game with a strikeout.

    Danville 5, Dubois 4 (Game 2)
David Worthington's two-out, bases-clearing triple in the fifth inning propelled the Danville Dans past the Dubois Bombers 5-3 in the second game of a doubleheader at Danville Stadium.

Worthington, who was called out on strikes twice in the game against Dubois starter Matt Antos, drilled an 1-0 fastball bringing home Drew Haynes, who started the two-out rally with a single to left, Dan Kaczrowski, who followed with a single to center, and Andrew Pollak, who was intentionally walked to setup the bases loaded situation. Kaczrowski went 2-for-3 in the game with two RBIs, while Pollak walked three times.

Dubois had built a 3-1 lead on a run-scoring single by Daniel Nichols and the Bombers scored twice in the fifth on a Danville fielding error.

Austin Ross earned his first win of the summer, going five innings, allowing three runs, only two earned, while Lee Swindle got the final six outs to pick up his first save.

Danville and Dubois will play again on Thursday in Huntingburg, Ind. First pitch at League Stadium is set for 7:30 p.m (EDT).

While the Dans are idle on Wednesday, the Bombers are at home against the Springfield Rifles. First pitch at League Stadium is set for 7:30 p.m. (EDT)

Dragons and Gems Split a Pair
Dupage and Quincy split a doubleheader Tuesday night in Lisle. The Dragons won the opener 2-1 in extra innings, and the Gems bounced back to take the second game 5-3.

A pair of lefties made for a solid pitcher's duel in the first, as Tom Zelasko of the Dragons and Greg Hellhake of the Gems put together strong outings to keep their teams in the game. Each allowed a single run, with Zelasko going a full seven and Hellhake lasting five and a third. With the two teams knotted at one after the regulation seven innings, Andrew Estes pitched a scoreless top of the 8th to give the Dragons a chance to pick up the win, which they did on a Jordan Tokarz RBI bloop single down the right field line. Justin Wilson had a pair of hits in contest and score on the Tokarz hit.

The Gems jumped on Dragons starter Andrew Beatty in the second game to the tune of four runs by the middle of the fourth to jump out to the early lead. Just as it appeared the Dragons would make things interesting with a three-run sixth inning rally, Jon Myers belted his league-leading 14th home run of the summer to put the nail in the coffin and Kevin Lee, who'd quelled the rally an inning before, polished things off with a perfect seventh. Myers went 3-4 with three driven in to lead the Quincy attack.

Jarrett Casey went the first five innings, allowing four runs, three earned, to get the win and improve to 4-5 on the season. Bombers closer Chase Joiner got the final six outs to earn his sixth save.

Dubois had four hits in the contest with Zach Rowles having a triple, Eric Hanlon had a double, while Wes Fink had a run-scoring single and Jared Baehl also had a single.

Danville took a 1-0 lead in the first inning on a run-scoring double by David Worthington, the Dans scored another run in the fourth on a Zach Walters ground out and their final two runs scored on a Dubois throwing error.

Quincy Gems' Myers Creeping Up on Home Run Record
With his 13th round-tripper of the season Saturday night, Quincy Gems' Jon Myers has hit more home runs than two entire teams this summer in the CICL.

Since the creation of the CICL in 1963, only four players have hit more than 13 home runs in a season, with the last being Twin City's Frank Mustari, who hit 14 in 1986 when teams used aluminum bats.

Springfield's Loren White holds the CICL record with 20 in 1984, also using aluminum bats.

The wood bat record is 17, set by Jim Cox of the Bloomington Bobcats in 1971. Cox later played with the Montreal Expos from 1973-76.

The league used wood bats from 1963-1974, aluminum from 1975-1989, and wood again since 1990.

Myers' next homer, his 14th, will tie him for 3rd on the all-time list with Kelvin Moore (Peoria, 1977), who later played for the Oakland Athletics 1981-83, and the aforementioned Mustari.

His 13 home runs are tied with a couple of other players who went on to play in the Major Leagues, Joe Hague (Galesburg, 1965), who played with the Cardinals and Reds from 1968-73, and Karl Pagel (Charleston-Mattoon, 1974), who played with the Cubs and Indians from 1978-83.

The Gems have 6 remaining regular season games.

The Gems added two more runs in the fifth on three singles and a walk to take a 8-2 lead. The Bombers got back into the game with three runs in the sixth but Quincy was able to tack on a run in the eighth hold off the Bombers for the win.
